Flooring Cut List Generator
A cut list tells you exactly what to cut — piece by piece, row by row — before you start. Herron generates one automatically from your room layout. Draw the room, enter your tile or plank dimensions, choose a pattern, and get a numbered cut list in minutes. Works for tiles, LVT, laminate, and wood flooring.
The Problem With Most Flooring Calculators
Most online calculators give you square metres or a tile count. That answers one question: how much to buy. It doesn't answer the question you'll face on install day: what do I actually cut?
You're standing at the tile cutter or the mitre saw. You've got a room full of unopened boxes. You need to know which pieces to cut, what dimensions to cut them to, and what order to lay them in. A number on a screen — "47 tiles" or "12.3 square metres" — doesn't help with any of that.
That's where a cut list comes in. It bridges the gap between "how much material" and "how to install it." Instead of figuring out every cut on the fly, measuring against the wall, guessing whether an offcut is reusable, you work from a list. Piece 1: full tile. Piece 2: cut to 243mm. Piece 3: offcut from Piece 2, reused. Row done. Next row.
What Herron's Cut List Includes
Herron generates the cut list automatically once you've drawn your room and selected a flooring product. Every piece in the layout gets a sequential number, grouped by row. Here's what you see for each piece:
- 1 Piece number — sequential, so you can mark tiles as you cut them and track progress through the job.
- 2 Dimensions (W x H) — the exact size of the piece after cutting, in millimetres (inches).
- 3 Row assignment — which row the piece belongs to, so you can batch-cut everything for a row at once if you prefer.
- 4 Full or cut — instantly see which pieces go down whole and which need the cutter.
- 5 Blade angles — for herringbone patterns, each piece shows the cut angle so you don't have to work it out.
The row-by-row numbering system is deliberate. It matches the way you actually install flooring: start at one wall, work across, move to the next row. The cut list follows the same sequence, so you can read it like a set of instructions rather than a parts manifest.
Offcuts are tracked too. When a cut piece produces a leftover that's large enough to reuse elsewhere in the layout, Herron marks it. You'll see which offcuts get placed and which are waste, so you know exactly how many full tiles or planks you're consuming.
Works for Every Flooring Type
Herron isn't tile-only. The cut list generator works across every common flooring material, because the underlying geometry is the same: you have pieces of a known size, a room of a known shape, and you need to know what to cut.
Tiles (any pattern). Straight lay, brick bond, herringbone — the cut list adapts to the pattern. Herringbone pieces include blade angles. Brick bond pieces show the stagger offset. Enter any tile size from small mosaics to large-format 600x1200mm (23 5/8" × 47 1/4") porcelain.
LVT (click-lock and glue-down). Luxury vinyl tile and plank follow the same layout logic as ceramic tile but with different dimensions. Enter your plank width and length, and the cut list reflects the actual product you're installing, not a generic assumption.
Laminate. Stagger requirements matter here. The cut list tracks offcut reuse across rows so your stagger pattern stays consistent and meets manufacturer minimums. You'll see exactly which offcut starts each row and whether it's long enough.
Wood and parquet. Solid wood, engineered wood, parquet blocks — same principle. Enter the board dimensions, choose your pattern, and the cut list maps it out. Herringbone parquet in particular benefits from having angles and piece numbers in front of you before you start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the cut list generator free?
You can draw your room, set up your product, and preview the full tile layout for free. The complete cut list with numbered pieces and dimensions is available with a project unlock — a one-time payment per project, not a subscription.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Herron runs entirely in the browser. Works on desktop, tablet, and mobile. No app store, no download, no account required to start.
How accurate is the cut list?
The cut list is generated from the exact geometry of your room polygon and your tile or plank dimensions. Every piece is clipped to the room boundary mathematically, so dimensions reflect real cuts, not estimates. The accuracy depends on how precisely you draw your room — but the maths is exact.
