It comes from the layout the engine computed, board by board, against the polygon you drew, with your grout and expansion gap in place. It is not square footage divided by box coverage plus a buffer, which is wrong in both directions: on a straight lay that rule under-buys about two rooms in five.
A cut piece thin enough to break when you lay it, or to look wrong against a wall. Herron flags them against the shape of your tile rather than one fixed width, then shows you the starting position that removes the most of them.
